Ken Haynes Travel Award Winner: Jessica Allison

I’m Jessica Allison, and I’m a postgraduate researcher at the School of Biological Science in Queens University Belfast. At the end of May 2026, I had the opportunity attend and present part of my PhD research at the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Advanced Course "Molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions and virulence in human fungal pathogens” in La Colle-sur-Loup, France . It was a valuable experience to share my work with researchers from across the field of mycology and to receive feedback and engage in scientific discussion surrounding my research. The course provided an excellent opportunity to hear about the innovative research currently being conducted within the field, while also allowing me to connect with established researchers and fellow early career scientists. Building these professional connections and learning from experts whose work has contributed significantly to medical mycology was incredibly inspiring and beneficial for my own academic development.
I am also very grateful to the course co-ordinators for organising such a memorable programme, including the day trip to Monaco, which made the experience even more special. Attending this conference was both professionally and personally rewarding, and it is an experience I will not forget. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Irish Fungal Society for awarding me the Ken Haynes Travel Award. Their support made it possible for me to attend this course and gain such an important experience.
